A recent study by IDC showed that the segment of “Smart Connected Device”, which includes PCs, tablets and smartphones, has experienced a strong growth in 2013, in contrast to many other IT areas.
In the last quarter of 2013 the volume of deliveries of these devices in Italy has reached 7.2 million units, 24 million pieces annual. This is an increase of 16.9 % per year.
The tablet’s segment contributed a lot, with 4.5 million units sold and an increase of 57.8% on annual basis .
If you are going to consider the volume of sales, however, the smartphones are the masters. They represent, in fact, 60 % of total SCD delivered in Italy in the fourth quarter of 2013, with a market growth of 22 % compared to 2012.
Bad for the PC industry (-7 % in the last quarter of 2013), although a slight recovery in the business sector is planned for 2014.
Samsung again confirms the market leadership in the SCD segment ( 36.9 %), followed by Apple (18.6%), showing, however, a slight decline of 1, 2% in favor of Nokia (best annual performance an increase of 18.2% compared to 2012).
This ranking remains unchanged if we consider only smartphones, with Samsung in the lead, followed by Apple and Nokia. Together, these three companies account for 75% of the Italian market.
As for the tablet, Samsung retains primacy in terms of number of sold units, while Apple is in the lead in terms of value. In third place Mediacom, followed by Acer and Lenovo.
In the PC industry, HP wins, followed by Asus and Acer.
Although for 2014 is expected to slow down slightly, the SCD sector is estimated to grow of 10%, thanks to an increase of 25.8% of the tablets, increasingly used by companies.
Smartphones will grow by 10.1 %, thanks to the arrival of new models and driven by a more competitive market.
